Charles Clegg CC BY SAWhy learn a second language if you can get along with English? It is true English is the survivors’ language in nearly every (large) city on Earth. However, if you want to create an unforgettable, authentic travelling experience, you will definitely need a connection with the locals: their language!

The best way to learn about a country, a city or a village is through its people. Even if they speak English, they sometimes feel uncomfortable and appear to be a bit distant to foreigners. If you want to break the ice, start with saying “THANK YOU” in the language of local people, and you will definitely receive a smile and a warm welcome. A few more phrases in the local language may open up a lot of doors for you to places where English wouldn’t take you.

Chatting with local people is the best way to explore their culture, their food and their lifestyle. Remember that not everything can be translated into English, so the more phrases you know the more easily you will win their friendship.

Knowing the local language will save you from many unpleasant surprises too. You will be able to read the menus, the signs, and even understand what others are saying about you.

So, learning a foreign language is not only an essential professional qualification for one’s career advancement. It is a must for keen travelers as well. Luckily in Europe, you can get along in many countries if you know French, German, Italian or Russian.  Therefore, don’ t rely on English and start exploring the world with a new language!
