We often get excited seeing our kids mastering our (or even their) electronic devices. Their engagement with a tablet has even been a relief for us, especially when it offers a moment of quietness at home or at a restaurant. It is a fact that a child should learn how to spend some time alone; this is a vital stage for childhood development. Yet, can this stage be achieved with a tranquilizer device?
The UK National Union of Teachers is worried about children who spend much time using tablets. These children do not enhance adequate interactive skills, they do not communicate effectively with the environment, they often develop ADD and other learning disabilities, and they find difficulties in doing their homework alone or even in putting up a wall with toy-bricks.
Technology, the Internet and electrical devices are part of our life, and indisputably children should not be deprived of them. However, it is imperative for children to learn how to think, before learning how to use a device. They should be aware of who they are, of their skills, their needs, and the capacities of each device, as well as of the threats and dangers of it.
